POUND is a full-body cardio jam session, combining light resistance with constant simulated drumming. The workout fuses CARDIO, PILATES, isometric movements, plyometrics and Isometric poses into a 45-minute class. It strengthens and sculpts infrequently used muscles, and you drum your way to a leaner, slimmer physique – all while rocking out to your favourite music!
Through continual upper body motion using the lightly weighted drumsticks, called Ripstix®, you'll turn into a calorie-torching drummer, POUNDing off pounds as each song flies by. Rock, rap, dubstep, pop and old school music fuse to create the POUNDtrack series.

We run Zumba® Kids and Zumba® [ages 12-16] classes at schools, nurseries, groups and youth clubs throughout Redditch and the surrounding areas, so please contact your child’s school or group to see whether we're currently running sessions there. We run sessions as part of the curriculum, as before-school, lunch-time and after-school clubs, as one-off sessions or blocks, and for special events or charity days.
Zumba® Kids [Parent & Child]
Zumba® Kids classes are the ultimate dance-fitness party for children aged 4-11. The programme features age-appropriate music, moves and dance games that get the kids moving to the beat. It’s all about feeling fearless on the dance floor, reinforcing the idea that it’s okay to just be yourself and dance like nobody's watching!
Classes last 45 minutes and incorporate a warm-up, a rhythm review (which teaches a particular step and its origin), Zumba Kids dances (including breakdowns of the routines), games and a cool-down.
Zumba® Kids [Parent & Child] classes are a fantastic and unique opportunity for parents and children to keep fit and have fun together! Routines are specially tailored so that they are suitable for both children and parents, giving you a great opportunity to enjoy a Zumba® Kids party together! We also play a fun dance-based game, where you’ll bond, be silly and have fun with your child. It’s a dance ‘n’ play party that both kids and parents LOVE!!! ...and yes, you will feel like you’ve had a workout!!
We run Zumba® Kids [Parent & Child] classes occasionally during the school holidays, so keep an eye out on the Young & Funky Fitness Facebook page or website to see if a class is running.
Zumba® [ages12-16] classes follow the same format as adult Zumba classes but the choreography and music are adapted to specially suit this particular age group.

When I was introduced to Zumba® in 2009, I immediately knew I’d found something I’d love! Captivated by its unique mix of dance, fitness and world music, I ditched the day job to embark on a career as a Zumba® Instructor. Since setting up Young & Funky Fitness, I have developed close links with many of the schools in the local area, delivering Zumba® Kids classes as either a breakfast, lunch-time or after-school club, or as part of the curriculum.
I now also run regular weekly classes for adults, as well as exclusive classes for private groups such as teachers (a great way to finish the school day after the kids have gone home!) and colleagues at large corporations where health and fitness is promoted within the workplace.
I am a licensed Zumba®, Zumba® Kids, Zumba® Kids Jr., Zumbatomic®, Zumba® Burst, Zumba® Step and Zumba® Toning Instructor and an active member of the Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN™). I was one of the first Instructors to pass the new Zumba® Combo qualification, meaning I hold the Level 2 Exercise to Music certificate and Exercise, Movement & Dance Teaching qualification with a specialism in Zumba®. I am now also one of the first UK instructors to qualify as a POUND Pro, bringing POUND to the UK from the U.S.A.
I am Enhanced DBS checked, fully insured and hold Sports First Aid and Safeguarding and Protecting Children certificates.
I’ve had a passion for dance ever since I put my first pair of ballet shoes on at 4 years old. Spending my childhood dancing my way to gold awards, I’ve experienced first hand just how dance can capture the hearts of children and, with its awesome music, moves and focus on fun, how Zumba® has done the same for adults! I love the fact that I can help people party themselves into shape!
Having worked with children as a Play Area Supervisor and Party Co-ordinator, as a Volunteer working with street kids in Sri Lanka, and as a Child Mentor in schools, I have extensive experience working with children of all ages.

Philippa was invited as part of an initiative to make sport more inclusive in the Autumn Term of 2012. She was able to deliver Zumba classes to our Year 11 and Year 10 girls as part of their fitness programme. From the very first session when you arrived early in order to set up all your equipment to the final session when the children had the opportunity to perform to their parents, you have been fantastic. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to book?
There’s no need to book…just come along! If it’s going to be your first Young & Funky Fitness class please try and arrive 10 minutes early so that you can complete the short Medical Questionnaire prior to participating.
How much do classes cost?
All classes run on a pay-as-you-go basis and cost £5.00 per class. If you do two consecutive classes on one night you’ll pay just £7.00 for 2 classes. There are no membership fees, you don’t have to pay upfront and you can attend as and when you like!
What should I wear?
We always recommend wearing loose, lightweight clothing that you feel comfortable in; such as leggings, shorts, jogging bottoms or cargos, with a t-shirt or sports vest. As long as you're comfortable and your workout wear allows you to stay cool (e.g. no jeans!) you can wear whatever you like!
However, TRAINERS ARE ESSENTIAL to ensure that you have the correct cushioning and support to protect your feet. You will not be allowed to take part bare foot or in sandals/shoes that can easily slip off.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
All equipment is provided FREE at each class - including Zumba® Toning sticks, POUND Ripstix and mats. You may want to bring your own water bottle with you, but we do have a free drinks dispenser with tap water available. You may want to bring a towel to the POUND class but it’s not essential.
What if I’ve never been to a fitness or dance class before? What if I don’t have good coordination?
It doesn’t matter! The great thing about Zumba® and POUND classes is that generally anyone can take part in (please speak to the instructor prior to the class if you have a medical condition that may be affected by exercise). As with any exercise class, it takes a few weeks to pick up some of the moves so, if you are new, just follow the moves as best you can and concentrate on learning the correct technqiue in order to perform each exercise correctly. Each time you come you’ll find that you work a little harder, and you’ll soon find that your coordination improves as you get to know the moves…you may feel that you don’t have any coordination now, but these classes are the pefect way for you to develop it!
What if I have a medical condition, injury or I’m pregnant?
If you have a medical condition or injury that may be affected by exercise, please indicate it on the medical questionnaire you complete on arrival and speak to the instructor prior to the start of the class. In general, there are very few reasons for not exercising at all and we can usually adapt both the Zumba® and POUND workouts to avoid aggravating any existing medical condition or injury.
Pregnancy is a slightly trickier area and you must inform the instructor if you are pregnant. Unless you’ve been advised to avoid physical activity by your GP or midwife, if you've taken part in a Zumba®, Zumba® Toning or similar group exercise class previously, then there should be no reason why you can’t continue to take part in these classes right up until your due date, as the moves in these classes can be easily adapted during pregnancy.
However, due to the more instense nature of the POUND class and the moves involved, I will not be able to accept anybody who is pregnant or who is within their 6 weeks post-pregnancy (12 weeks for those who have had a cesarean).

Your personal data and your membership
As a participant of my group exercise classes, I collect, store and use the personal data that you provide on the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q), which you complete when attending your first Young & Funky Fitness class. I do this so that I can effectively manage my classes and ensure that as a participant you are kept informed and safe. I will use your data to inform me about any health or wider needs you have that I need to consider whilst delivering your class/es. If you have provided me with emergency contact details I will use this data when required. Some of the data I collect from you is ‘specialist category’. This includes (not exhaustively) any data relating to disabilities and health. I collect and use this data to enable me to tailor activities to your needs.
If you provide your mobile number I may use this data to contact you regarding any urgent class updates. I may also contact you when organising and running events you have agreed to attend. Your mobile number will be stored on my mobile phone which is password protected. I cannot guarantee that I will contact you directly about events or last minute changes to the class schedule as it will depend on the circumstances, so please check the Young and Funky Fitness website (youngandfunkyfitness.co.uk) or the Facebook page (facebook.com/YoungandFunkyFitness) prior to attending a class or an event in order to check the latest information.
I will not share your personal data. All data you provide on the paper PAR-Q is transferred to a password protected device following your first class. The paper copy of your PAR-Q is stored securely at my home address.
